Artist Statement Drawing from personal narratives, Aaron solidifies the ephemerality of memory into a tangible form through relief carving. This physical space of hand-carved relief sculptures is complicated by areas of illusionistic painted space which push beyond the boundaries of the carved surface. In both carving and painting, the repetition of individual marks accrue, making visible the time and labor involved in the work's creation.
The car has become a locus of Aaron’s interests, acting as a bridge between public and private space and allowing for competing senses of intimacy and voyeurism. The car window is an intermediary between these spaces. What we see while driving, we inherently see from the frame of our car window, be it a frame of removal, of voyeurism, of safety, or alienation. This framing device reinforces the ever-present awareness of our body, presence, perspective, and the limits to which those extend. |
